Leti's arms were protesting loudly against the pile of books she was trying to carry. Even louder as she tried to balance them in one while the other held her glossy white cell phone. Having scheduled all her classes back to back, Leti was now suffering the fate of carrying around her writing manual, her french book, three philosophy books, and an art book every Monday and Wednesday. Continuing her education was one of the many stipulations on her mother letting her move about the country. Oh, how she wished that it was summer again, where she had no worries but searching for the monsters her grandmother had seen.
"Yes, Jason," she told the boy on the other end of the phone. "Yes, I'm sure you don't need to come here first." Her second in command, Jason, was preparing to take a group overseas. They had heard a heavily stiffled rumor that there were vampires in Italy, and, since Leti couldn't go herself, she sent the only person she could really trust. "Call me when you're plane lands," she told him. However, trying to talk and balance her books kept Leti from seeing a bottle that someone had failed to get into the trash can. Before she could even say goodbye to Jason, her foot hit it. Books flew everywhere as Leti toppled to the ground.

Bella was rushing to history when she stumbled over a book. Looking up, she noticed a girl sprawled out on the pavement beside her. Several books were spread out around her. It amazed Bella that such a small girl would even attempt to carry so many at one time.
"Here, let me help you up. What are you carrying so many books for anyway? Maybe you should invest in a good backpack. It would help eliminate problems like this in the future," she said with a friendly smile as she walked over to the girl. She picked up the books that we clostest to her slowly, making sure not to move too fast, and balanced them easily in her left hand. Extending her right hand towards the girl, she waited for her response.

It was all Leti could do to keep from screaming "damn it!" at the top of her lungs. Master of time, my ass, she thought. That was what her grandmother had claimed... That she, the clumsy girl that couldn't even walk right, would some day become the 'master of time.' It had been laughable then, and it was still laughable now. Of all the times for her powers not to work... Deep down Leti knew that it wouldn't have helped anything. Even if time had frozen, she still would have busted her tail bone... And she couldn't exactly just grab her books and keep walking. The only solace she had was that nothing had exploded.
Lost in her own little world, Leti didn't notice that someone was talking to her until she reached for a book and saw someone else pick it up. Her tunnel vision quickly jumped back to full view and she saw another girl, probably not MUCH older than herself, collecting some of the books. Quickly, she pulled together the rest and took the girls hand. "Backpack...right..." she muttered, pulling a couple words from her brain's instant replay. "Thanks...."

"No problem. . you look a little frazzled. Anything I can do to help?" Bella asked with a friendly smile as the girl took the books. "I'm Bella." Bella extended her hand as if so shake the other girl's hand but quickly pulled it back when she realized that she didn't really have a free hand to shake with. "Are you from around here? Your accent sounds a little unfamiliar."

Frazzled was an understatement to how Leti was feeling right now. Worrying about school, her powers, and a bunch of vampires that may or may not be about to destroy the world. Yeah... frazzled didn't exactly cover it. "Leti," she responded, noting the outstretched hand. She might have tried to shake it if this Bella girl hadn't immediately retract it. Probably for the better anyway. She had just gotten all of her books off the floor and wasn't really looking to drop them again.
"No. Definately not from around here," she answered, starting to walk a bit. Whether or not Bella chose to follow was up to her, but Leti was late to her French class, and Professor Froment already didn't like her very much after she corrected his verb conjugation on day two. "I'm from New York," she continued, shifting the books a bit so that they weren't jabbing into her side. "Not the city or anything. Just upstate." Leti hardly even looked at the girl as they walked. Maybe if she had then she would have noticed...

Bella nodded; she had figured as much. "What brings someone from New York to the little town of Port Angeles? Surely there were better schools on the east coast," Bella said with a slight laugh as she followed Leti, focusing on going at an even pace so she didn't out walk the human. Human, Bella chuckled to herself. She was still so unused to being anything other than human. It amused her to refer to someone else as being human, which she had been a short time before.
"I'm surprised that anyone would actually want to move here. It's not exactly a big, fancy town, or even a well-known town. . not that I have a problem with it or anything. I just don't understand the migration patterns of people," Bella said with a light, airy laugh.

"To be completely honest?" she said with a casual glance at the girl, "I'm here because of a misclick on the common app. And then I figured, Hey, I've already payed for it. Might as well finish it out." Leti had this story mapped out end to end. There wasn't a question that Bella could possibly ask that she wouldn't have a completely logical explanation for. "Yeah, there are better schools on the East coast," she went on, "But that's exactly what I didn't want. To stay on the East coast. And when my misclick became the only non-East coast school to except me... Well, you can see where I ended up."
Leti motioned to her books with a half-smile. "My parents weren't exactly thrilled" she went on. "but its a good school, with a good Art History department, and its not costing them that much money... Except to pay for these unnecessarily heavy, god awful books and my apartment downtown." The apartment, she reminded herself silently. After all, it wasn't really hers. It was the headquarters for the group of Opposition members that had come with her to this town. "How about you?" she asked, trying to change the topic. "Are you from around here?"

Bella nodded, signifying that she understood what Leti was saying. "Sort of. I live a few cities over, but it's close enought to here. So art history, sounds like a very. . lively major." Bella said with a bright smile, trying to lighten the bad mood Leti seemed to be in.
"So were you headed to class or what?" Bella asked, trying to keep the conversation going. She rarely talked to anyone ourside of the Cullens, her family, and occassionally her professors and any random partner she got stuck with when projects were assigned. It was nice to have an actual conversation with someone about something other than calculs or biology or economics.

Leti laughed a little at Bella's lively major crack. It was true that maybe Art History wasn't the most exciting thing in the world, but it gave the most accurate view of the past. The real past. The one with vampires and werewolves that even she hadn't believed in until her grandmother's death. Any writing, any poetry from history that told stories of the supernatural were marked as fabricated stories, which blurred the line between truth and fiction to the point where it was indistinguishable. Art, on the other hand, couldn't lie. One look, one real deep look at a painting or a vase and you could really see the entire picture. (No pun intended.)
"Yeah," she responded to Bella's question, her eye only flitting to the girl's face as they tried to pay attention to where she was going. Her feet were carrying her so swiftly that it was a wonder that Bella even bothered keeping up. After all, her tumble had done nothing more than make her extremely late. "I'm actually running late to Writing the Essay," she explained. "My teacher literally locks the door when the class starts which has bonus repercussions today because there is a 4 page essay due today, hence the almost running and the not really having time to talk right now." She gave Bella a quick apologetic look, hoping she'd get the picture.
