Name: Fira Nightly
Age (Real/Apparent): 22
Gender: Female
Type of being: Shapeshifter
Diet preference: Normal
Power: European Lynx
Likes/Dislikes:
Fira loves cars, and relying on her own strength. While she adores appearing strong, she does not mind showing her more feminine and vulnerable side when she goes out to party. She enjoys tearing up the dance floor, and meeting new people. She also really likes cutesy things like small children, fluffy animals, Hello Kitty, etc.
Fira hates people who prey on the weak, or people who complain about things, but never do anything to try and make things better. She also doesn’t like people who hide behind other people’s choices, never making decisions on her own. Reality TV bores her, stupid-funny movies annoy her, and arrogant people get her fist in their face. She dislikes salty foods, and the color yellow.
Physical Description:
Fira’s hair is her guilty pleasure, because she should keep it short for fighting, but she has kept the brown hair down to her shoulder blades. She has figured out many ways to secure it, and still look good. Her eyes are a shade of dark honey, with long, black eyelashes surrounding them. She has two piercings in each lobe, as well as a hoop in the cartilage of her left ear. She has a Celtic knot tattooed on her lower back, and a paw print with claws tattooed on her right shoulder blade. She stands at 5’ 10” and weighs 155 pounds. Her figure is deceptive, appearing willowy when she is really stacked with muscle. She wears a moody style of make-up that emphasizes her eyes. Normally she is dressed a bit grungy because of her work, but she knows how to dress herself up for a night on the town. She normally has the holster for her gun, Immortal Rose, hidden somewhere on her body, along with any other tools she feels like carrying on a particular day.
Personality Description:
Fira’s energetic, and quite the feminist. She is very protective of her little sister Aquaphine—having moved past her bitter jealousy she once had for her sister’s talents, and now taking just as much pride in Aqua’s accomplishments as she does her own. She has been trained to react, then think, and tends to behave as such, even outside of battle. She enjoys lacing most conversations with a little bit of sarcasm. She is aggressive and blunt, but always has a smile available to smooth over situations such mannerisms can create. She’s quick to form her opinion of people, can hold a grudge for ages, but believes people can change. Fira is loyal to those she cares for, and doesn’t mind cutting down those for whom she does not care. She is usually very laid back, but hit the right button and her hot temper will be quick to flare up.
History:
Fira was born in Concord, New Hampshire, a mere four minutes before her twin sister Aquaphine on January 14. And then, a mere four days after she had been born, her mother had finalized the process of giving her children away, leaving the twins in the care of an adoptive family—the Nightlys. Greg Nightly was a vampire hunter, and Marie Nightly was a beautician. Hunting had been in the Nightly family for centuries, methods being passed down from one generation to the next. Her father had been hoping for a son to train, but Fira and Aqua had been the only children up for adoption at the time, so he decided to train them instead. The training was brutal. The weapons they used were bullets designed to explode once lodged within the body. By aiming for the shoulders, knees, neck, and hip, the intention was to blow off limbs so the vampire could not heal, then gather the pieces and burn them. Fira enjoyed the training, unlike her sister, who was quick to drop out of hunting and follow other pursuits. Because her father was busy, most of her training was done by a family friend, ex-hunter Tom. He had studied many fighting techniques, and blended the best together for Fira. Besides martial arts, Tom also taught her gymnastics, deeming the muscle control valuable. He gave her the key to his studio so she could practice whenever she needed.
Her childhood was normal outside of her training. She had plenty of friends, and performed decently enough academically, but she was by no means remarkable. Girls flocked to her, deeming her a prince charming with boobs. She found the whole thing funny, and went along with it, showing all the lads how a real gentleman should behave. Guys for the most part avoided her, finding her intimidating. Fira did not mind this the slightest, for it just meant that all the guys who she did become friends with had a backbone.
When decision time came at the end of her high school years, Fira decided that she wanted something besides hunting to fall back on for a career. She followed her interest of cars to a technical school where she trained to be a car mechanic. She went to a nearby technical school, and completed her training in a year and a half. She kept in close contact with her sister, who had attended a university in New York.
Just after Fira had graduated, she managed to find work in a local car shop, and began to settle. Not long after her 22th birthday, she joined her father on a hunting mission. Tom, who missed the old days, decided to come along. They split up to do a sweep, and had nearly decided to give up the hunt when Fira heard Tom scream. Fearing for the old friend, instinct took over Fira, and for the first time in her life Fira shifted into a lynx. Panic made her unaware of the sudden change, and she raced to Tom’s side in her feline state, only to find him dead. He had been drained of blood by the vampire they had been pursuing.
Fira’s father, upon finding an oversized lynx over his old friend, was about to shoot when Fira shifted back into her human form. Along with the loss of Tom, Fira was also stricken with the fear of what had happened to her. Greg Nightly began to ask around with hunting circles he knew of, and found out about shapeshifters. Fira was terrified about being hated by her adoptive parents, but to her surprise found them to love her all the same. Her father had heard stories about shifters, most of whom saw vampires as their natural enemies. He said that she had just been granted another method to hunt, and that family was family, no matter what.
Still unsure about how to feel about this new side of herself, and not wanting to remain in the place she had seen her mentor die, Fira decided to leave New Hampshire. After doing some research she found out about the Quileutes people of La Push, and how they believed they descended from wolves. Daring to hope that the story referred to shape shifters, Fira moved into Forks, Washington. She found a job as a car mechanic in Beaver, nine minutes away from Forks, and began her quest for answers.
Writing Sample:
Fira stood out in a field, feeling stupid. Her clothes were all folded up next to her, avoiding the tear-to-shreds tendencies of shifting. The field was surrounded by trees, blocking off any direct line of sight of her naked body to the road. Hopefully nobody was hiking. She tossed back her head, her faced scrunched up with concentration as she tried to shift.
Fira slapped her side, and looked down to see another mosquito bite had joined her collection. It hadn’t even occurred to her to use bug spray. And it was getting colder. And she was standing naked in a field. So stupid.
“What the hell was I thinking?” she mumbled to herself, kicking angrily at the dirt, only to stub her toe on a rock. With a gasp of pain she grabbed her foot, but lost her balance. Down she went. She fell as an array of flailing limbs, landing as ungracefully as one could. With a groan she rolled onto her back, staring up at the sky. She thought back to that day, the first and only day she had shifted. It had felt almost like a release. The way her muscles had rippled as they rearranged and strengthen, the deep of reach her sense of smell and hearing took. She smiled at the memory, and her chest rumbled with a purr.
A purr…?
Fira rolled over and got up, only to find that her body naturally stood on four limbs instead of two. She looked down to find paws, and she flexed them curiously, seeing a glint of her hidden claws in the moonlight. Gaily she pounced, throwing her head back as she pronounced her victory with a yowl.
